re: So most university students think they should get a 'B' for good attendance and a little more for 'effort.'
There is an assumption that college education is essential.
Quote: Is it possible that it is not worth the money and the diploma does not guarantee any standard of excellence?
In the US there has been a government attempt to provide a universal college education. It seems to me that this is a market intervention with consequences. The consequences would be 'more college' than a market allocation would call for.
While it seems obvious that there is 'more college,' it is unclear to me how there might be more (or less) quality as a result of governmental/societal assumptions about everybody going to college.
I am not questioning the value of education. It is pretty clear that human resource is one of the most important prerequisites for wealth creation.
Didn't Thomas Edison have a minimal formal education, yet a great belief in education and perspiration?
Bill Gates is the richest college drop-out in the world. Sun Microsystems' (Java) Scott McNeally said,
http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-07-1998/jw-07-idgns-school.html (reference only. Not a recommended click)
"You see, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard. I finished. So I learned what a monopoly is. Apparently, it would have helped (Gates) to stay a couple of extra years and learn the definition of monopoly. We were there at the same time. He would have heard the same classes, had he stuck with it," McNealy said. "My mistake, obviously, (is) he got a head start on me."
Had Microsoft's chairman and chief executive officer stayed in school, he would have learned why monopolistic practices that limit customer choice -- like predatory pricing, bundling, and exclusionary contracts -- are illegal, McNealy said.
"There is no question Microsoft is a monopoly. That is not debatable. The first chapter of an Economics 101 (textbook) will tell you that 95 percent marketshare is a monopoly. It's indisputable," McNealy added. |

For genii college may not have much value. But how about for the rest of us?

Granted. My concern by posting that blurb was not to express support for college education necessarily. The point of course is that the standard for success is no longer fixed or external: it's personal and fluid and amoral. We're witnessing the socialization of psychopathy. "The ends justify the means."

That last statement wasn't fair. Intelligent young men and women can sense big trouble on the horizon. What's the point of trying to excel in a system that their parents have broken?
On another note, I was shopping at a major Canadian department store recently and found a kiosk for these shrink-wrapped products tucked in the middle of Men's Wear. The perfect stocking stuffer?

I was shopping today. Passing a family in Ladies' Wear, I overheard the following from a tall young woman in her twenties: "Hey Mom, These are on sale. What's forty percent off a hundred dollars?"

That must have been the checkout clerk who when given $1.03 for a 78 cent item returns the 22¢ and the 3¢ back to you because "the machine calculated the change" for her and our 3¢ wasn't necessary...probably was a college grad as well. Amazing educational system, when the bar is lowered enough, the grads just roll out...I wonder if any of these grads and some will have MBAs by now, are in the government and "know it all"... <sound of head shaking>

From the Dept. of Monument Envy:
Ziggurat: Dubai Carbon Neutral Pyramid will House 1 Million (25-Aug)
Quote:| The Mayans and Egyptians constructed incredible feats of architecture able to weather the test of time, but they had no idea their pyramids would inspire the shape of the latest carbon-neutral super-structure to hit Dubai. Dubai-based environmental design firm Timelinks recently released some eye-catching renderings of the gigantic eco pyramid - aptly named Ziggurat - with plans for its official unveiling scheduled for the cityscape Dubai event which runs October 6-9 of this year. The ginormous pyramid will cover 2.3 square kilometers and will be able to sustain a "community" of up to 1 million. |

I didn't see the word "diversity" anywhere in the article. So I don't know what to make of it.
"Carbon Neutral?" That is where both sides of the equation are multiplied by zero.
Is it scary? Well, I like the idea of trying a massive new design that is supposedly 'well thought out.' It is conceivable that such a place could satisfy every want in life. One could spend a lifetime in there and never want to go outside.
On the other hand, it is kind of fun being outside and suffering every adversity.

That was more of a 'Curiosity' than a 'Scary.'
I was washing the car yesterday afternoon when two neighbors made special trips just to admonish me for missing the Obama inauguration. "What are you doing? Don't you know history is being made? What's wrong with you?"
They probably also watched the rerun of 'Dave' that aired a few hours later.
Here's a 'Scary' for them:

Fin ancial Professionals Turn To Psychics For Advice (Telegraph, 18-Jan)
Quote:| People are scared. I have one client whose husband is on suicide watch. She doesn't know who to turn to for help. It's a difficult time for a lot of people and it's our job to put them at ease – to give them that bit of guidance or clarity that they are looking for. |

My father anticipated the Israeli ceasefire nearly two weeks ago, knowing it would be timed to coincide with the inauguration. He's a cynic, not a psychic.

Janet Napolitano, "Myth Buster" (24-Apr, Transcript HERE)
Quote:| What is Barack Obama doing appointing someone to head Homeland Security, who, eight years after the attacks, does not even now know where the hijackers came from and how they got into their country? Here, it’s not her ignorance about Canada which should be troubling. It’s her ignorance of the most publicized event in modern American history. How can anyone be head of Homeland Security and not know the history of the 19 men who killed nearly 3,000 Americans? |
|
If she doesn't grasp the official story, then she must be asleep to everything else. If Obama is planting ignorant people in positions of strategic importance, then he does not expect accountability in those areas. Fascinating!

Do we need a separate topic for 'Angries?' I submit this mundane blurb under 'Scaries' for the time being.
I find the social engineering at retail check-outs offensive: everything from prescribed cloth bags to prescribed method of payment to 'recommended reading' (scandal sheets) to job replacement by automatic check-out. Now there's this:
Supermarkets Set To Refuse Cash (11-Jun)
Quote:Dutch supermarkets are hoping to phase out the use of cash by 2014, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Thursday, quoting the retail board CBL.
The aim of the ban on cash is to make supermarkets less vulnerable to armed robberies, the paper says.
According to CBL research, 87% of chumps customers support moves to stimulate the use of direct debit cards.
The Telegraaf reports that €10bn of supermarket total turnover of over €30bn last year was in cash. Supermarkets had to deal with 200 'incidents', ranging from a grab at the cash register to armed robbery, the paper said.
Other solutions will be found for customers who do not want to use direct debit cards, a CBL spokesman said. 'Technology is making enormous advances. Trials are also being done with payment by mobile phone, but you can also pay with a finger print or iris scan,' the spokesman said.
The Dutch consumers association said the move was 'going too far'. |
|
The bit about 87% fits with comments from local gas jockeys. Most people embrace those little Speed Pass keychains or some other form of plastic. My rule is CASH ONLY. If they want my scrip, they had better restrain their socialism.
